KBIIS FAQs

What is the Kentucky Business & Industry Information System (KBIIS) Search?
The Kentucky Business & Industry Information System (KBIIS) Search allows users to query and view details about facilities (usually with 10 or more employees) within the KBIIS database. A maximum of 100 facilities will be displayed for any search.

What types of facilities are included in KBIIS?
KBIIS includes manufacturing facilities and service & technology type facilities such as headquarters, distribution centers, call/data centers, back-office operations, etc. in Kentucky (usually with 10 or more employees).

What is a NAICS code and how do I know which to choose?
NAICS is the acronym for North American Industry Classification System which has replaced the U.S. Standard Industrial Classification (SIC) system. NAICS is based on a consistent, economic concept. Establishments that use the same or similar processes to produce goods or services are grouped together. For an in-depth look at the NAICS background and to use keywords to search for a NAICS code visit http://www.census.gov/epcd/www/naicsdev.htm.

I need help with the Category section under NAICS.
NAICS calls the highest level of aggregation in the system a Sector (2-digit). Think of a Sector as a division, such as Manufacturing – 31; Transportation/Warehousing – 49; or Professional, Scientific, and Technical Services - 55. If you want the widest variety of facilities using the same process, use the 2-digit Sector.

The Sub-sector (3-digit) is a major group within a Sector. For instance, Food Manufacturing 311 would be a Sub-sector within Sector 31 (Manufacturing). Apparel Manufacturing 315 would be another Sub-sector within Sector 31. If you want to narrow your “manufacturing” search to a group – such as all food manufacturers, you would use the Sub-sector 311.

The National Industry (6 digit) limits the search to a specific process. For instance, if you wish to find all of the soybean processing facilities in the KBIIS database, you would select National Industry for the Category, 31 Manufacturing for the Sector, 311 Food Mfg as the Sub-sector and then highlight 311222 Soybean Processing.

What is the Kentucky Business & Industry Information System (KBIIS) Location/Expansion Announcement Search?
The Kentucky Business & Industry Information System (KBIIS) contains information about facilities (usually with 10 or more employees) which are manufacturing operations or service & technology type facilities such as headquarters, distribution centers, call/data centers, back-office operations, etc. The Location/Expansion Announcement Search allows users to query and view details about facilities that anticipate locating or expanding within the state of Kentucky.

What types of announcements are in KBIIS?
KBIIS announcements include: Manufacturing facility – either a new location or an expansion announcement Service &Technology facility – either a new location or expansion announcement.

Where do announcements come from?
KBIIS announcements come from various sources - data provided by facilities, local economic development contacts, media announcements, and Cabinet programs designed to locate and retain industry.

How precise are announcements?
Announcements include estimated number of new full-time jobs and estimated capital investments. Activities are reported in the year the announcements are made, even though full employment announced may not be realized until future years. If an announcement is known to have been cancelled, it will be removed from the Search utility. Announcements are subject to change throughout the project/announcement lifetime.

How often are announcements entered into KBIIS?
Announcement data is entered monthly, normally following a Kentucky Economic Development Finance Authority (KEDFA) Board Meeting; but may be added at any time as information becomes available.

Why do some announcements list only the county?
If a specific location has not yet been determined, the announcement may only list the county.

What are Emp Beg and Emp Full columns and why are some of them blank?
The Emp Beg column identifies the initial number of new full-time jobs to be added; the Emp Full column identifies the total number of new full-time jobs when full employment is attained. If the columns are blank, the announcement does not include new full-time jobs. These columns do NOT identify the number of current full-time positions at the facility – only the anticipated new full-time jobs to be added.

Why do some announcements include figures in the Jobs Retained column?
The Jobs Retained column identifies the number of jobs a facility must retain in order to qualify for incentives under the Kentucky Reinvestment Act (KRA). For additional information about KRA visit http://www.thinkkentucky.com/kyedc/pdfs/KRAFactsheet.pdf.

Why do some facility names show up more than once within a county?
Some facilities expand multiple times during their lifetime. In addition, there may be more than one facility in a county with the same name with announcements made about each.
